Daily Activity Computer Science Student, Ida Wahyuni Research Story

Last Updated on September 30, 2022

This year is the beginning of the third year of the course that I took. Yes, now I have entered the fifth semester. I plan to study Ph.D. here for 4 years and currently, it is halfway.

There must have been many stories that I wanted to share over the past two years. Including experiences of getting pregnant, giving birth, and raising a baby while studying. However, I will share that story next time. Because in this video, I will focus on my life on campus, especially in the laboratory. As I have explained before, I became a Ph.D. in the Department of Computer Science and Information Engineering.

Research Story

Talk about the research, I am currently pursuing research in the field of deep learning with image data as an object. This research was conduct in collaboration with the Taiwan Council of Agriculture. The purpose of this research is to segment the agricultural areas in Taiwan automatically with deep learning technology.

This is a new challenge for me where I have to combine Geographic Information System (GIS) data with Deep Learning. The point is, I will automate the process of digitizing polygons. Which the previous process was manually create using ArcGIS to become automatic with the help of Deep Learning.

Course & Qualification Exam

Apart from doing research, another activity I do on campus is a discussion with the team. Here, Ph.D. is in charge of being a leader to conduct research with Master’s students. Ph.D. students can also do joint research with Master’s students so that the research load can be shared.

As a Ph.D. student, I have to complete 18 Credits, 2 Qualification Exam and Publish 2 SCI papers as a requirement to apply for defense. This semester I have completed 2 Qualification Exams and will pass 18 Credits. Besides that, I am also in the process of writing a paper after 1 year of doing research. Hopefully, my paper will finish soon and publish, please pray for the best!

Research conducted by Ph.D. students will publish in journals or conferences to complete publication obligations. The research carried out must have a novelty value that can be calculated. Because the intended journal is an indexed journal from Clarivate Analytics (SCI).

My Laboratory

Ida at ISSL Lab

At NCU, I joined the Information Systems and Software Laboratory, or ISSL. The research focus of this lab is on software development, so the scope of knowledge is comprehensive. Starting from information systems analysis, programming, to artificial intelligence. Apart from the projects I have worked on, there are also other projects such as financial analysis, mobile authentication, driver authentication, image classification, internet of things (IoT), and yield optimization.

Of course, every project has its own challenges and difficulties. Therefore, as a student, we should be willing to learn many new things. It cannot be denied that the more we learn, the more we realize that our knowledge is nothing. Because of that, we must learn everything until whenever.

Learning is a process that never stops as long as we live.

In the lab, especially at CSIE, each student has a work desk include with several facilities. In this lab, the facilities obtained by each student are personal computers (PCs) and several computer servers. This server computer is using for the development, testing, and data storage of the project. For teams with projects that require deep learning training, server computers are also provided with capable GPU and RAM. Of course, the facilities provide are balancing with the workload given.

Working Days

Apart from studying and doing research, every master’s and Ph.D. student must attend the project meeting. For each team, a project meeting is held twice a week. Each team member must have a progress report submitted at the meeting. The work schedule in this laboratory is 5 days a week and 6 hours a day, of course, excluding overtime hours. Saturdays and Sundays are holidays and we can use them to rest or do other activities.

Thank you for following the story of my activities while on campus. You can also see my daily activity in this video. Hope you enjoy it. If you like this video, don’t forget to like and subscribe to the Indowhiz channel. See you in the next story.
